Support Offices
Office of Graduate Studies
Dean Harrington provides graduate students with advice and support for all aspects of their training. If a student has a departmental issue, they should contact her via email.
The Graduate School
The Graduate School has several deans covering different aspects of the Graduate School experience. Students in need of emergency funding or assistance with personal, medical, or family matters should contact Maria Suarez, Associate Dean of Student Support. Students with issues related to diversity and inclusion may wish to contact Alycia Mosley Austin, Associate Dean of Diversity & Inclusion.
University Ombuds Office
The Ombuds Office is an independent and confidential resource for faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and associates, graduate students and medical students with concerns arising from their work and studies at Brown.
Graduate Student Grievance Procedure
Students are encouraged to discuss any issues with their mentor, graduate program director, or Dean Harrington. There is also a Graduate Student Grievance Procedure which is one of several processes available to graduate students alleging inappropriate treatment. The Grievance Procedure page has complete information about this as well as references to available offices.
Family & Housing Resources
Housing
Brown maintains a limited number of on-campus apartments for graduate students. The Office of Auxiliary Housing manages an off-campus housing service that provides listings of privately-owned apartments and rooms for rent. Students are encouraged to consult the Guide to Off-Campus Living for helpful tips on local neighborhoods, landlord/tenant relationships, and more.
Family Resources
The Graduate School website provides a number of family resources for members of the Brown Community. Student and Trainee parents can also connect with other families via the Graduate Students and Postgrad Parent Listserv. The Brown Student Parent Community Group is a new group of Graduate Students and Postdocs who are parents -- you may connect with them via email.
Parking and Transportation
Trainees are able to ride Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) buses and trolleys at no charge. Members of the Brown Community can use the shuttle service to travel to sites on College Hill, the Jewelry District, and select affiliated hospitals. Access to Brown's parking facilities is managed by the Office of Transportation and Parking Services.
