The Division of Biology & Medicine, in alignment with federal agencies such as the NIH and NSF, requires comprehensive instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research. This training is a cornerstone of professional development and occurs at various intervals throughout a scientist's career. To meet federal requirements for "substantial face-to-face discussion," the Division has launched a modernized training model: The RCR Ethics Exchange.
The RCR Ethics Exchange Model and 2026-2027 Schedule
Beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year, our primary RCR training utilizes a Hybrid Intensive format. This model is designed to respect the rigorous schedules of our first-year trainees while fostering a deeper, community-wide culture of integrity. The program consists of two mandatory components:
- Foundational Online Training: Participants complete CITI Program modules independently to establish a shared understanding of federal regulations and institutional policies.
- In-Person Ethics Exchanges: The CITI modules are followed by two 4-hour, high-impact intensive sessions. These "Exchanges" move away from traditional lectures, focusing instead on small-group case study analysis and vertical mentorship. Sessions for the upcoming academic year are scheduled for January 5, 2027 and April 30, 2027.
Required Participation
The RCR Ethics Exchange sequence, organized by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, is required for all entering PhD students in the Division of Biology and Medicine.
Postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty with career development grants are welcome to participate in this training or one of the advanced modules listed below. Please direct any inquiries regarding participation or registration to Melissa Walsh at Melissa_hoh@brown.edu.
